UPS FINED $9,000
UPS has agreed to pay a $9,000 fine to the Federal Election
Commission for not adequately informing
managers that they do not have to make political contributions and
won't face reprisals if they don't.
Experts say it appears to be the first time the Federal Election
Commission has punished a company
for not making it crystal-clear that contributions are voluntary. The
UPS Political Action Committee
contributed $1.8 million to candidates in the 1995-96 election cycle,
of which about 65% went to
Republicans, making it the 13th largest Political Action Committee
and the biggest corporate giver.

Enforcing the National Agreement
ARTICLE 12 : RIGHT TO EXAMINE HOURS WORKED
RECORDS
A employee or union has the right to inspect the previous day's
records recorded on the DIAD or other
devices.
New language also allows employees to examine operation records
for the entire current pay period,
making it easier for members to determine if their paychecks are accurate.
UPS agrees to provide forms, and when requested by the Union,
to leave time clocks in place, for
employees to record their work hours.
ARTICLE 17: PAID-FOR TIME AND PAYROLL
ERRORS
All employees covered by the UPS agreement shall be paid for
all time spent in service of the employer.
If UPS allows employees to work prior to their start time, these employees
have the right to be paid for
their time.
Vacation checks will be paid no latter than the workday prior
to their vacation, or UPS must attempt to
provide the check the next day, including delivery by Saturday or next
day air.
For other shortages of pay involving more than $30 for full-timers
or more than $15 for part-timers, UPS
must pay an additional penalty equal to one-half of the employee's
daily guarantee if the shortage is not
corrected on the employee's second scheduled workday if the shortage
was the result of UPS' error.
Smaller shortage of pay will be corrected in the following weekly
paycheck.
Working off the clock
means you are working for nothing
hurts other members by making it look like the job can be done
in less time than it really takes
ARTICLE 21: UNION ACTIVITY
This article prohibits UPS from discriminating against stewards
and members for union activities which
do not interfere with the conduct of UPS's business such as:
wearing union clothing when UPS uniform standards do not apply,
or where there is a practice of
allowing union pins on uniforms
holding union-related discussions during break times
