Dear Craig:

This letter is in response to your letter of November 11, 1997. I just recently received a copy. While the letter was addressed to me and appears to have been sent Certified Mail, it was not received.

Your information is incorrect. The majority of Local 70 stewards at United Parcel Service have not been appointed in violation of Local 70's Bylaws or Shop Steward's Rules and Regulations. Neither have stewards been replaced or removed in violation of the rules. And finally, there is no political litmus test prior to a member serving as shop steward. Members have the right to support candidates of their choice. Local 70 has and will continue to defend that right. To imply that the steward's position is a reward for political loyalty in this union is absurd.

The record is quite clear. You resigned as shop steward and then sought to reclaim the position at a later date. Your charges have been dismissed at every forum to which you have taken them, most recently the NLRB.

Finally, with regard to stewards' elections at United Parcel Service, I would expect that they would be scheduled and conducted in the very near future. The Agreement between United Parcel and the Teamsters is very close to ratification.

If there is further clarification needed, please advise.
