California State Senator Don Perata 9th District and former Teacher
As a father, a son, a Son of God, I bring my condolences and my respect. A man of peace, ironically, is honored more in death than in life. But it falls to all of us to continue his work. The eloquence of his son is a tribute to his death and will live in my heart forever. I hope that all of us will not let the evil deeds of an assassin overshadow the mission of peace in this life and ever after. California State Senate Adjourned in Ajmer's Honor.

  Senator Don Perata

Yvonne Bealy, Field Representative, from Assemblymember Tom Torlakson's Office
To Satinder, the Malhi family and many friends, we would like to offer our prayers, respect and support to you at this most difficult time. Today we are here to honor the life of Mr. Malhi and the great things that he contributed to all. Though tragic in the way that he left our lives, we must remember that he is in a much better place today. It's up to us to live as he lived, believe as he believed and forever carry that passion in our hearts. In the three years that I have known Satinder, in knowing you, you are a leader, you are strong and you have a passion. You are a young man with a cause. Just as we are proud of you, your father has instilled in you to be a man of character. I know that you will continue to make your father proud.

Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown's, Chief of Staff Gilda Gonzales
I want to say on a personal note that I was with the Mayor last month. We went to the Sikh Temple, in El Sobrante, and we had an opportunity to meet with Mr. Malhi. The whole time we were there, he was an absolute fierce advocate for the situation in the schools and the Teachers. The Mayor walked away from that experience very struck with the fighter that he was on behalf of you all. Once again, with our deepest sympathy we would like to extend this to you at this time of sorrow.
  Chief of Staff Gilda Gonzales

Oakland Vice-Mayor Henry Chang,   Henry Chang, Oakland Vice-Mayor and City Council Member-at-Large
I’m here today on behalf of the Mayor, City Council and City Government to join with all of you to mourn the loss of a religious leader, a man of God, a peacemaker and a beloved math teacher. This is a great loss for the City of Oakland, for the Oakland School System and especially for the students of Skyline High School. I urge all the citizens of Oakland to bow your heads and join with us to mourn the loss. Then lift up your head and celebrate his life, celebrate the contributions he made, not just to the City of Oakland but to the entire Bay Area.  On Tuesday, January 25, 2000 the Oakland City Council Ajourns in Memory of Ajmer.

Dan Siegal, President of Oakland Unified School Board
I can barely understand what a terrible loss this is to you and the entire Sikh community of Northern California and indeed the World. It is tragic that often we do not know the greatness of a person until he leaves us. I have known Ajmer for many years. My son and my nephews and their friends have been to high school with him. Ajmer Malhi’s name was always raised when you asked the question, “Who are some of the best teachers at Skyline.” As I came to know him myself over the past few years, I could see what the young people were talking about. Ajmer had a passion for teaching. He had a passion for his colleagues. He was a strong and able advocate for the Oakland Education Association.

It wasn’t until his tragic murder that many of us learned of his role in the Sikh Community. We saw that not only was he a leader in the School District but he was a leader of thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands of people. We began to appreciate the full measure of this man.

Dan Siegal, President of Oakland Unified School Board

Richmond Councilman John Vasquez   John Vasquez, City of Richmond Councilman
On behalf of my colleagues on the Richmond City Council, the Mayor who is unable to be here, she’s in Washington D.C. at this time, I want to express our sympathy and condolences to the family. We want you to know that our feelings are with you. We want you to know that your feelings are with us. Thank you.

Maria Alegria, City of Pinole Councilwoman, former Mayor and President of Oakland Catholic Charities
It is with a heavy heart that I am here today as the Sikh community has embraced me as one of your own. I’m here to offer my deepest condolences to the family because it is a tragic loss to our community in Pinole because the Temple was located very near to our city and many of our residents worshipped in that temple.  Ajmer was truly a light of inspiration and peace and I will truly miss him. But we must all join together and continue his legacy, not only to fight for peace but to fight for justice. I pledge that support to you today. Thank you.  - On Tuesday, February 1, 2000 the  Pinole City Council Adjourns in Memory of Ajmer.

Leo Bazile   Leo Bazile, former Oakland Vice Mayor, City Councilman and Attorney at Law; Partner, Harrison, Taylor & Bazile Law Practice
To the family of Ajmer Malhi, I come too to lend my voice in praise of this great man. The phrase “great man” is not loosely used because of the titles that follow the name. All are worthy of praise. Holy Man, Servant of God, Teacher, for many of us Math Teacher which is very important at this time. I’ve had occasion as attorney for Mr. Balgit Singh to go to the temple. On each occasion, Mr. Mali was always welcoming, peace loving and humble. The thing that struck me the most was his smile. He had a very beautiful smile and a humble demeanor. You knew that this was a very important person. I was at the temple the day that Mayor Brown came out.

City of Oakland Police Chief Richard Word
On behalf of the entire City Family, especially the Police Department, we extend our thoughts, prayers, and condolences to the family of Mr. Malhi. I can only think of what his students are going through. This is a difficult time for them, so we certainly shouldn’t forget them because such a man of peace, a great educator had so much to give. Those students will need us now, more than ever to support them as well as his family. I thank you; it’s certainly an honor and my privilege to be here.
